22, 2008 (Boca Raton, Fla.) - The Haven received a grant of $20,000 from HSBC
Bank, USA, N.A., in support of its successful AIM (Academic Inspiration and
Motivation) Tutoring Program, which helps The Haven's young men to increase
standardized test scores, encourage homework mastery and completion and improve
their GPAs.
"HSBC invests in educational programs that give young people hope, a positive
attitude, opportunities for success, and a better future - all of which can be
found in the AIM Tutoring Program," said Heather Malkin, Director of Community
and Philanthropic Services at HSBC Bank USA, N.A.
AIM is a multi-faceted academic advocacy effort and after-school program that
provides professional tutoring, school-focused advocacy and training in
academic skills. The AIM program identifies each young man's needs; matches him
with the most appropriate tutoring situation; tracks his progress; and rewards
him for incremental goals.
"AIM is a vital piece of our program," said Don Stewart, executive director of
The Haven. "For many of our boys, this is the first time in their lives that
they are being encouraged to succeed academically. Our tutors are very talented,
patient and encouraging. We have seen our boys' grades dramatically improve in
the last year."
The Haven is an alternative home for young men, ages 9 up to 18, who have been
placed in protective care by the State of Florida. Our program is designed to
foster the development of each young man's self-esteem and independence in a
safe, loving and stable alternative home while teaching the skills necessary for
them to become self-sufficient and proud adults. The Haven is an accredited
organization through COA, the Council on Accreditation and has an "exceptional"
4-Star Charity rating from Charity Navigator. For more information on how you
can help the young men at The Haven call (561) 483-0962 or visit
